Track Tip - Consistency (by Brian Sax)

A critical aspect of a training program for running track and for distance running is consistency.  The more consistent you are with your training program, the more success you will likely have on race day.  Consistency in training, sleep, nutrition, and tissue work are all paramount in achieving an elite level (or in improving in general).

The benefit of an excellent coach is that the coach typically will make sure his or her athletes will train consistently.  This includes not just the actual training component, but also intelligent recovery (enough time) between training sessions.

The sleep, nutrition, and tissue work is primarily managed by the athlete.  Eight to nine hours of sleep per night, naps when necessary, regularity of sleep schedule, eating as many raw foods and organics as possible, eating as close to the “paleo” diet as possible, receiving massage therapy twice or more per week, and using baseballs, softballs, and rollers for your own tissue work are all essential to your success.  Again, however, your consistency in all of these areas is, and always will be, the key to your future success!
